A World Reborn

I never knew it would end so poetically.

As the world crumbled around me, I watched, fascinated. You would think one would fear fire, for its destructive properties know no end, and its rage will consume everything and everyone. But it was rather beautiful, glittering in the bright dying sun. It slivered its way around me, holding me tight in a comforting hug. Little glints of it flew into the air, like a phoenix rising up again. I suppose that’s what this world might be. We die and then we are reborn again, as perhaps beautiful creatures, to make up with our beauty what hatred and repulsiveness we have exposed into this earth.

Suppose when the buildings all crash as they are doing now, in a million or billion years trees will grow out, plants covering the earth. The flowers will rejoyce in their bloom, the trees unfurl in glee. The birds would join in their flight, flitting over treetops and open fields as the wolves chase each other without fear. Nature will take over as it always does, but this time we are not there to stop the spread of its grace and elegance. The sky and the earth will meet anew, their beauty never witnessed by the human eye but appreciated instead by the stars dancing around them.

As I walk forward, the fire following me like a child clinging on to their parent, I’m at peace. I believe we all knew this was going to happen. Perhaps it is more frightening than it feels, but knowing what must come after our passing, I can only hope for the future, even if I am not there to see it. I would wager that the earth and the sun will once again become the eternal heavenly couple of the universe.
